Higher Education's Purpose

Sylvester Stallone in the movie "Tulsa King" said "Do you think anyone really gives a **** about what your major is? English literature, biology, whatever. The whole point of a college degree is to show a potential employer that you showed up someplace four years in a row, and completed a series of tasks reasonably well, and on time. So if he hires you, there's a semi-decent chance that you'll show up there every day and not **** his business up.

Despite the vulgarity, I love this quote. Higher education in the modern day is decreasing as far as relevance goes.
Advancements in technology over the last two decades have made learning new skills accessible to anyone with an internet connection. A cell phone today can hold more information than any library could ever come close to containing.
So skills can be taught online, and information is the easiest it's ever been to obtain. Why even bother with a college education?
I believe the main reason post-secondary education is needed in today's world is because college forces young adults to start viewing the world as they see it, not as their parents saw it before them.
Living away from home, studying without parents nagging, and showing up for morning classes are all indicators of a student who "has skin in the game". Young adults in college are really learning what is important to them as an individual.

From my own experience, I did a semester of school at a different university before my time at Snow College. Frankly, I was a terrible student. Due to my time at that university, I was much better prepared for a second chance here at Snow.

Great post. Great insights! Going along with your thoughts, I would recommend the book "Becoming a Learner" by Mathew Sanders.

I love your post about higher education is so true there are not many purposes for college education these days. I love Sylvester Stallone so much; he is in some of the best movies! He is probably honestly my favorite actors. This actor has taught me so many valuable life lessons over the years. - Jenny
